Sunday 14th June saw Swim Ulster take their annual summer festival to Newry Leisure Centre. With the event being held on home ground plenty of the Newry swimmers decided to participate and for some this would be their first major gala.
First off the blocks for Newry and Mourne was Tara Haffey, Hannah Mc Govern and Katie Burns in the 50m butterfly. Tara took silver in the 9 year old girls and Hannah came a respectable 4th, while Katie took silver in the 14 year old girls. This led the way for the rest of the squad. Medal upon medal was added to the collection with Newry and Mourne coming away with a haul of 63 medals in total. 23 gold, 22 silver and 18 bronze. 78 personal best times were recorded and for some, most importantly of all, 5 elusive division 2 times were achieved. Eve Dunford got a division 2 time for the 100m freestyle, Aimee Burns for the 100m back crawl, Ben Rafferty for the 100m freestyle and Alexander Marfunin for the 100m freestyle and also the 100m breaststroke.
All in all this was a hugely successful gala for the Newry club with so many excellent times recorded, leaving the youngsters in jubilant humour as their own end of season gala approaches.
