The middle weekend in July saw 6 swimmers from Newry and Mourne swimming club head to the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin to compete in the Irish Division 1, the ultimate gala for all young swimmers. After preparing all season Caoimhe Connell, David Corkey, Aine Fitzpatrick, Hannah Gilsenan, Juliana Kelly and Shea Rafferty were more than ready for this challenge. With the girls kicking things off in the relay, Newry were already off to a good start.
All swimmers were on top form and everyone secured personal bests in all of their races. Shea, in blazing form, swam out of his skin and made it into the finals of the 100m back crawl and the 100m freestyle. Not only did he do his club proud with this achievement, he also secured an Ulster squad time in the 100m freestyle.
This excellent performance by the entire team is a testimony to the hard work of the swimmers, head coach Paul Rogers and volunteer parent coaches. The staff of Newry Leisure Centre also deserve a word of thanks as they have supported the club and its swimmers all season and helped the swimmers on their way to a very successful season.
