The Newry Girls Waterpolo team attended the Irish Under 14 Cup that was held in Galway . Even though this was the first time that the girls had played as a team it was not evident in the way that they beat their rivals. The first group game saw them victors with a score line of 16-0. With this positive start they then met Tribes the local Galway team in their next game to determine their position in reaching the semi-final. This game was not for the feint hearted, down 6-3 going into the last quarter required immense effort and determination to try and win a place in the semi-final. Goals from Aimee Burns, Clara McKeever and Katie Magill and a resilient defence guaranteed their place with a 6-7 victory. The semi-final proved to be a step too far with defeat against St Vincent’s who then went on to become the Irish Under 14 champions. It was an absolute pleasure to see the girls rewarded for their commitment throughout the year. This success only goes to show that Newry are now firmly back on the Waterpolo map with a bright future as the majority of the girls playing at the weekend have another 2 years at this age group.
