Newry’s youngest claim victory in Larne

NEWRY JUNIOR SWIMMERS TAKE ON LARNE

Friday 4th April saw a small team from Newry and Mourne junior swimming squad head north to Larne in the penultimate gala of the aquasprint league for the 2016/2017 season. Excitement was at fever pitch among the youngsters as a win here would secure a place in the top 3 of division B, putting them in with a chance of promotion for the 2nd year running.

Things got off to a reasonably good start for the Newry youngsters winning 3 out of the 4 medley relays. Heading into the individual events Larne started to pull back some of the points but the Newry team piled on the pressure and gradually began to pull ahead. The front crawl relays again showed the strength of the Newry team with them winning 3 out of the 4 available. When the final relay came to a fingertip finish Newry had done enough and beat Larne by an impressive 40 points.

As always the victory was a massive team effort but some exceptional swims were on display. Darragh Quinn won 3 events and came 2nd in the other. Teagan Carville won 3 and came 3rd in the other. Lewis Gray won 3. Ella-Grace Heaney and Rio Loughran both won 2 and came 2nd in another. Tara Haffey won 1, came 2nd in 1 and 3rd in 2. Tara Phillips, Finn Garry, Liam og Mathers and Shea Mathers all won 1 each.

After securing promotion from C division last season the Newry youngsters worked exceptionally hard to be placed in the top 3 of B division and are currently training hard for the league final in early June. Thanks must go to all the volunteer coaches, aquasprint coordinator Enda Mc Elherron, head coach Paul Rogers and the staff of Newry Leisure Centre.
