NEWRY SWIMS UP A STORM

Saturday 11th February saw the Newry and Mourne team take to the blocks against Ballymoney for the final gala in the PTL league of the 2016 / 2017 season. With the gala taking place in Newry everyone was in buoyant form hoping to build on the successes of late. As always, proceedings commenced with the medley relays and straight away Newry began to show their power by winning 7 out of the 8 relays giving them a 24 point advantage heading into the individual events. Spurred on the Newry team never let up and point after point were clocked up. The youngest girls and boys were on fire altogether taking the first 3 places in every single race as did the older D group boys. Heading into the freestyle relays Newry was sitting comfortably but they still kept piling on the pressure and won 6 out of the 8 up for the taking. When the final race blazed to conclusion Newry secured a very nice victory of 644 points to Ballymoney’s 500.

As always the event was very much a team effort but some exceptional displays of swimming were on show. Ciara Malcom won all 5 of her races. Tara Haffey and Ben Rafferty won 3 and were 2nd in the other 2. Shea Rafferty won 3 and was 2nd in another, Jack Donnelly won 2 and was 2nd in 3, Rose Mc Polin, Rachel Kelly and Liam Og Mathers won 2 and were 2nd in 2 and Sean Mc Kevitt won 2 and was 2nd in another. Anna Mc Polin, Ella-Grace Heaney, Lewis Gray, Thomas Meagher and Darragh Quinn also had a win each for Newry.

A fantastic finish to the season for this Newry team who have gone from strength to strength all season. Thanks has to go to the volunteer coaches led by head coach Paul Rogers, the parents who volunteer tirelessly and to the staff of Newry Leisure Centre for their constant support of these talented youngsters.
