Newry swimmers retain Armagh Champs Title

Saturday 4th February saw the entire squad from Newry and Mourne swimming club led by club captains Hannah Gilsenan and Oran Mc Stay head to Armagh to defend the Armagh Championship title. Up against stiff competition from Portadown, Lurgan and Armagh the team were out to bring the trophy back to Newry.

The day long gala began with both the medley and freestyle relays. Newry showed its strength by winning 9 out of the 16 and placing 2nd or 3rd in the rest securing a good lead before the individual events commenced. Point after point were notched up on the score sheet by the Newry swimmers, showing such strength that the entire final of the over 15 boys freestyle consisted of Newry boys. When this final came to a blazing finish Newry had done enough and secured another sensational victory with a lead of over 300 points ahead of Armagh their closest competitor.

Some fabulous display of swimming came from Ben Rafferty who won 3 of his races and came 2nd in the other. Amy Hunter and Aimee Burns both won 3 events. Rachel Kelly, Stephanie Hart and Sean Mc Kevitt won 2 and came 2nd in the other 2. Shea Rafferty won 2 and came 2nd in another and Liam og Mathers won 2 and came 3rd in another. The rest of the squad also took home a host of medals and more important for their coaches, clocked up a host of personal best times showing that all their training is paying off.
