Newry Swimmers prove to be among the best in the country!

Saturday 14th January saw over 30 swimmers from Newry and Mourne head to Bangor for their chance to gain the times they all crave to take them to the Irish division championships this summer. With the qualifying window only opening up in January everyone was out to bag their times at the first opportunity. The first event of the gala saw Newry’s Ben O’ Kane grab a qualifying time for the Irish division 2 championship in the 400m freestyle. Rose Mc Polin also bagged a qualifying time, David Corkey got 2qualifying times, Ben Rafferty, Aimee Burns, Naoise Carroll, John Moan, Sean Mc Kevitt and Alexander Marfunin got 3 and Jack Donnelly got 4 qualifying times.

Ciara Malcolm in flying form managed to secure division 1 times in the 100 and 200m back crawl and also took gold in the 200m back crawl. Shea Rafferty in blazing form as always did his club proud. Shea secured 5 division 1 times in the 100 and 200m front crawl, 50 and 100m butterfly and 100m back crawl. He also bagged 4 silver and 1 bronze medal to add to his collection. A fantastic day of swimming for all the youngsters. Those who did not yet gain their times all managed to gain personal best times bringing them closer to their goals.

Thanks as always has to go to all the coaches and volunteers, head coach Paul Rogers and the staff of Newry Leisure Centre for all their help and support of these talented youngsters.
