NEWRY SWIMMERS START THE NEW SEASON IN STYLE
Saturday 24th September saw the swim team from Newry and Mourne take to the blocks against Lecale for the first gala of the 2016/2017 season. This was set to be a tough gala as the Lecale team narrowly beat Newry last year.
As always the medley relays kicked the proceedings off with Newry claiming 6 out of the 8 relays giving the home team a good start. The individual swims then got under way and Newry began to show Lecale that things have changed dramatically since last year. Piling on the pressure, Newry swam to claim point after point showing that they were definitely a team to be reckoned with. Heading into the final freestyle relays Newry were in top form and claimed all 8 of the relays up for grabs. When the last race was over Newry had done the job they had come to do and turned the tables on Lecale. The final score was Newry 644 to Lecale 500.
The entire gala was very much a team effort with all the Newry swimmers giving their all. Exceptional swims came from Amy Hunter with 4 wins, Tara Haffey and Alexander Marfunin with 3 wins and 2 seconds, Liam Og Mathers with 3 wins, a second and a third, Molly Ryan and Shea Rafferty with 3 wins and Ben Rafferty with 2 wins and 3 seconds.
A great start to the season for the Newry team. As always thanks has to go to the volunteer parents, volunteer coaches, head coach Paul Rogers and the staff of Newry Leisure Centre for all their help and support.
