The weekend of the 8th, 9th and 10th of April saw a 13 strong team from Newry and Mourne head to Bangor for the Ulster Age Group Championships. This was the gala where the best in Ulster were going to battle it out. The Newry team were in fine shape after training hard all season and were heading out to show their form.
Rachel Kelly the youngest of the team made the finals and also achieved personal best times in the 200 IM, 100 free, 100 fly and 200 free. She also secured a division 2 time in the 200 free. Caoimhe Connell made the 200 back finals and also got a personal best time. Aimee Burns got a personal best time in the 200 back and also secured a division 2 time. Rory Rafferty and Sean Mc Kevitt both made the 100 back final and got personal best times. Alexander Marfunin made the finals in the 100 and 200 breast stroke. David Corkey also made the 100 breast stroke finals. Shea Rafferty, on a high after being selected for the Ulster squad, achieved personal best times and made the finals of the 100 and 200 free, 200 fly, 100 back and 200 IM. Most impressively of all Shea secured the silver medal in the 100 fly, his favourite stroke. The rest of the Newry team all put in strong performances showing the determination of this great team.
Thanks as always has to go to the fantastic team of volunteer parent coaches, led by head coach Paul Rogers, who give their time so freely to help these young, talented swimmers. Thanks also must go to the staff of Newry Leisure Centre for all the help and support shown to the team week in week out. This weekend shows the results of all this effort.
