Friday 29th May saw some of the volunteers from Newry and Mourne ASC head to the titanic quarter in Belfast to represent the club at the annual Swim Ireland awards.
The 2015 -2016 season has so far been hugely successful for the club with the move into the new leisure centre and all children swimming at their best. Three years ago we had 17 entries in the development meet level of swimming, 6 entries in the qualifying meet level and 3 at division 2 level. To date this year we have 53 entries in the development level, 29 at qualifying level, 7 at division 2 and 6 at division 1. Our junior squad have had their most successful year to date, winning 4 galas and drawing another, they are now in the swim off hoping for promotion.
Our adult volunteers work tirelessly in the background to assist and encourage our talented young swimmers. Over the past year the volunteers have worked towards achieving the Swim Ireland club mark award, a sign of a truly dedicated club with the good of its members at its core. Policies and procedures have been overhauled and updated, coaches and parents are continually working towards ongoing personal development and best practice. This hard work and dedication was recognised in Belfast when the club was presented with the club mark award, one of only five clubs in Northern Ireland to achieve this. Newry head coach, Paul Rogers, also received a special award in recognition of his dedication to swimming for 20 years.
With the swimmers in such fine form this year, the strong team of volunteer coaches and parents providing constant guidance under the leadership of Paul Rogers and the support from the staff of Newry Leisure Centre it truly was great to see this hard work being recognised by its governing body.
