Saturday 9th April saw the junior swimmers from Newry and Mourne face the junior swimmers from Ballymoney in the 2nd last gala of the Forest Feast aquasprint league. As the gala was on home territory the team turned out in force hoping to build upon their successes of late.
As always the gala kicked off with the medley relays and Newry did not disappoint. They opened their score line by winning all 4 of the relays and bagging the maximum points. This invigorating start gave the swimmers the drive to keep piling on the pressure. 2 of the younger swimmers, Maeve O’ Hare and Charlie Magill both romped home to victory by winning all 4 of their strokes. Rachel Kelly won 3 of her races and came 2nd in the other, Aran Mc Laughlin also won 3 of his races. Other excellent performances came from Tara Haffey, Lewis Gray, Liam Og Mathers, Ben Rafferty and Jack Donnelly. All swimmers placed well in all of their races and secured some good personal best times. Young Leona Mc Cartney knocked over 8 seconds off her butterfly time, while Lucy Friar knocked a massive 11 seconds off her breast stroke time.
With these brilliant performances from the Newry squad the pressure was really on Ballymoney throughout the whole gala. The Newry team were on top form though and when the final relay finished the score ended up 234 to Newry and 155 to Ballymoney. This excellent victory brings Newry’s tally to date as 3 wins and 1 draw. A very positive season so far for the junior squad!
