Saturday 12th March saw the junior squad of Newry and Mourne swimming team head north to Downpatrick to take on Lecale swimming team in the 3rd of the aquasprint league galas. Having already been defeated by the senior team in the PTL league, the junior squad were going all out to redeem the Newry name.
First off the block were the youngest swimmers, the A group team in the medley relay. Darragh Quinn (back), Maeve O’ Hare (breast), Ellen Boyle (butterfly) and Charlie Magill (front crawl) were in cracking form as they powered home claiming the initial points of the gala for Newry. Inspired by the opening race the rest of the teams piled the pressure on and won 3 out of the 4 medley relays up for grabs. Moving on to the individual swims the team battled on with their usual enthusiasm and team spirit and managed to open up a small lead over Lecale. This carried through to the final freestyle relays where again Newry won 3 out of the 4. When the final race was won Newry was declared the winner with 211 points to Lecale’s 189.
Excellent performances were put in by Tara Haffey who won 3 of her races, was narrowly beaten into 2nd in the other by a fingertip and was in both winning relay teams. Ben Rafferty who won 3 of his races, came 3rd in the other and also was in both winning relay teams. Charlie Magill and Darragh Quinn shared their glory winning 2 races each, coming 2nd in the other 2 and were both on the same winning relay team.
Overall this was a superb performance by a very small Newry team, very much on form with 2 victories and a draw after 3 galas in the aquasprint league so far.
