Newry and Mourne Amateur Swimming Club started about forty five years ago as a social swimming club. It soon developed into a competitive club and currently has 114 swimmers, ranging in age from 7 to 18.
The club is placed in Division two of the Provincial Towns’ league and are training hard to try to be promoted to Division 1. The Aquasprint league continues to be a focus in the club and again we are working hard to be promoted.
The club historically hosts the annual Arthur McDonald gala which is a fabulous fun gala for the young, novice swimmers, More recently, the first Maria Murphy Memorial gala was hosted successfully and we plan to make this an annual event.
We continue to drive the competitive end of the club with many swimmers reaching the Irish Age Group Division 1 and Division 2 championships and many of the new, young swimmers attending the Development meets and gaining experience in competition.
The Newry Club also appointed a new chairperson, Barry Magill, who is leading the club forward particularly in terms of coordinating the move to our new pool which is expected to be ready in march 2015. Head coach, Paul Rogers continues to be committed to the club and is hoping to continue to drive the competitive side of the club when we move to the new pool. Peter Freeman and Ciara Fitzpatrick are the Club Captains and Enda Mc Elherron and Katherine Kepes are working hard again this year as the PTL and Aquasprint co-ordinators. As ever, we have a fantastic team of teachers and committee members, giving up their time to make sure the club activities run smoothly.
