Newry and Mourne swimming team travelled to Lurgan last Saturday for the 2nd time this year. The junior team had already faced Lurgan in the aquasprint league in January and were victorious so this left the entire squad travelling hoping for a similar result.
The A group girls relay team of Carly Mc Cartney, Shona Mc Keever, Tara Haffey and Sinead Mc Cartan were first off the blocks and they meant business. Fighting every inch of the way they touched first and claimed the coveted points for Newry. The A group boys’ team of Charlie Magill, Lewis Gray, Liam Og Mathers and Darragh Quinn also bagged maximum points. This inspired the older teams to try equally as hard and after the initial relays Newry had established a small lead.
As the individual strokes began the Newry team showed the work they have done all season and swam with strength and determination to gradually increase their lead. Showing great support for each other, the team battled on to claim point after point for Newry. Outstanding performances were put in by Stephanie Hart and Shea Rafferty, each winning four out of five individual events and coming second in the other.
Overall the gala was very much a great team event with Newry displaying the kind of spirit that has been evident in all of their galas of late. As the final relay was swum Newry were victorious claiming 607 points to Lurgan’s 537. A fantastic end to the PTL season for Newry and Mourne!
