Friday 5th June saw Newry and Mourne junior squad head to Lurgan to take on teams from Ballymoney and City of Belfast in the final gala of the aquasprint league for the current season. The junior squad, led by aquasprint co-ordinator Katherine Collins, were at fever pitch as they were swimming to retain their place in the current division 3.
First off the blocks were the A group team in the medley relay. Tara Haffey got the team underway with the back crawl, Maeve O’ Hare followed with breast stroke, Liam og Mathers with butterfly and Neil Quinn finished with the front crawl. Isabella Collins, junior girls captain set a fine example for all by winning all her races. Lewis Gray was in blazing form throughout. Winning all his 4 strokes despite swimming in an older age group.
All the Newry youngsters swam with the gumption and bravado of their Olympic heroes and when the final race was swum this was shown by the result. Newry won by over 30 points to retain their place in the division and are hoping under the excellent guidance of head coach, Paul Rogers, and the super squad of parent coaches to move onwards and upwards throughout next season.
